Four our case study, Todd and I decided to do a case study on a concept artist.
The artist we decided to look at was Gilles Beloeil – a freelance artist who has done a lot of work for Ubisoft.
We were asked to create a powerpoint presentation. He is some of the content.
Gilles has been a Senior Concept Artist at Ubisoft Montreal since 2007. Since 2008, he has spent most of his time working on the Assassin’s Creed games. Gilles also has work published in books such as “Digital Art Masters” (vol.7, 8, 9) and is a co-author of the book “Art Fundamentals” (3D Total). He played an important role in establishing the look and atmosphere of the worlds of Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Assassin’s Creed Unity.
Gilles primarily uses Photoshop and Softimage XSI to create his art.
Here is a quote from his Q&A:
“With a good portfolio, you can certainly find a job in a game company somewhere. Show the best of what you can do and you’ll have your chance when you will be good enough. The toughest thing is to start.”
Gilles uses his concept art to help create the atmosphere for a game and create a visual representation of the Art Director’s vision and what the game should look like when finished. He also takes screenshots from the game and paints over them to show how they can be improved.
